Product introduction - Lineage

[00:00]

Steven: hello, welcome to this product introduction on lineage. Lineage and Atlan is your way to understand your data flow. It can increase productivity for root cause analysis, impact analysis, and many other use cases. Lineage is needed fully generated through supported sources in workflows. Even down to the column level with lineage, you're able to explore the data flow of your data estate.

Steven Hloros: Lineage is accessed through a base asset. Clicking on the Lineage tab will take you to a graphical representation of the lineage. When first opened it will expand both one level upstream and one level downstream automatically. From here, you can visualize both upstream and downstream assets. If you want to expand further, you can click on the plus buttons next to the assets. If you want to expand all the way upstream or downstream, you can click on the expand all button. for supported sources

Atlan captures column-level lineage and can be viewed by clicking on the view columns drop-down under applicable asset types. This will show all the columns associated with the asset. Clicking on one of the columns, the lineage [01:00] will then update to display for that specific column. If you would like to capture a picture of the lineage graph, you can download it by simply clicking on the download image icon. If you prefer a report,

Clicking on the View impacted assets will show you either the upstream or downstream assets. You can download a CSV of the assets by clicking on the download CSV button. This can also be done on the main lineage visual with the download Impact Report icon. Clicking on an asset in the lineage graph will update the asset tab on the right-hand side to display the metadata associated with that asset, giving you the full context of the asset you are exploring.

The lineage processes themselves are also assets and can be clicked on to get context, including the sequel transformation that occurs during the process for supported sources.

And with that, we conclude our high-level walkthrough of Lineage.
