## Utilizing Asset Discovery to understand Data Quality

Knowing which assets are failing data quality checks—and how much of your data estate is actually covered—is key to building trust. Atlan’s Data Quality Studio brings these trust signals in as metadata, and with powerful asset discovery and filtering, it’s easy to surface failing assets or check your coverage across domains, sources, and any other metadata in Atlan.

Clicking on the assets icon on the left hand navigation takes us to the asset discovery page. Here, we see a listing of all of our assets inside of Atlan. On the left hand side are the filters available to us, including ownership, domains and products, and properties. Below these are the data quality filters for both Snowflake and Databricks. These filters enable us to combine with our other filters to quickly identify our data quality assets and focus on those that are failing.

For each, there are options for whether or not the asset has rules, the rule type and status, along with filtering by failure for specific rules or dimensions, and finally filtering based on the last run time. These filters open up the opportunity to combine to quickly discover failures for remediation. Such as, if we were looking to find any of our null count value failures in the last 2 weeks, we click on the failed status by rule and select null count. This limits our results to only the tables, views, or columns that have that specific rule where the last run status was a failure. To set the date parameter, we click on the last rule run time, change the operator to after, and then set the date 2 weeks ago. Our results update to show only those failed null rules in the last 2 weeks. This gives us a direct understanding of recent failures that we could look to remediate.

Or, if we were part of a specific domain looking to identify failures in data quality we currently have, we could clear our filters, update the domain to 'Customer', and then set the rule status to 'Fail', showing us all assets within our domain that need review for data quality.

A final use case for filters is to identify assets that do not have current data quality rules. We clear the filters and again add the domain filter of Customer, showing us our total data estate within our domain. We update the asset types to tables and views, and then filter by those that do not have rules. We can use the sorting options to sort by most popular to see the assets that are being queried the most but do not have rules, identifying key assets to apply data quality rules to, or search for key assets that we may know are critical to the business to check if they are lacking the trust built by data quality.

Whether you’re tracking down issues, checking coverage from Atlan’s Data Quality Studio, or spotting new assets to bring under quality checks, Atlan’s Asset Discovery and filters give you the control to surface exactly what you need—quickly and easily.
