Writer is the enterprise platform a team picks when it wants one vendor to supply the models, the retrieval, the agent runtime, and the admin console. The buying question that follows is less about features and more about where your business definitions will live once agents on this platform, and on every other one you run, start answering questions about pipeline, revenue, and churn.

Writer grounds its agents in its own Knowledge Graph and, since September 2026, in Enterprise Brain. Atlan is the [Context Layer for AI](https://atlan.com/know/what-is-context-layer/), which holds the definitions that every runtime reads. This guide covers what Writer includes, how its pricing works, how it integrates, and what a shared layer adds on top.

### Size Your Context Layer ROI

Takes your team size, hours lost to finding and trusting data, loaded hourly cost, and the count of stalled and planned AI use cases, and returns annual hours and cost recoverable plus the assumptions behind every figure. [Read the skill](/skills/context-layer-roi.md).

## What is Writer AI?

Writer is a vertically integrated enterprise AI vendor. [WRITER was founded in 2020](https://writer.com/about/) by May Habib and Waseem AlShikh, and its [homepage](https://writer.com/) calls it the enterprise AI platform for agentic work, built for marketing and revenue teams. The same page shows logos for Vanguard, Salesforce, KPMG, Uber, Dropbox, e.l.f. Cosmetics, SCAN Health Plan, and VOIS.

Few vendors own every layer. One company trains the model, runs retrieval, hosts the agent runtime, and supplies the governance console, which gives a buyer one contract, one security review, and one place to supervise agents. Skills, Playbooks, Voice settings, and Knowledge Graphs are all Writer features, so the work a team puts into them stays in Writer's formats.

### What are the top use cases for Writer AI?

WRITER positions the platform around marketing and revenue work, and the product pages show where the effort goes:

* **Marketing and revenue workflows.** [Enterprise Brain](https://writer.com/blog/enterprise-brain-press-release/) connects with Salesforce, Snowflake, Adobe Experience Manager, Gong, and Contentful to capture go-to-market context.
* **Knowledge assistants.** Teams point an agent at a Knowledge Graph built from policies, product docs, and wikis, and get answers with [inline citations](https://dev.writer.com/home/knowledge-graph-concepts).
* **Financial research.** WRITER lists [FactSet and PitchBook connectors](https://writer.com/product/connectors/) next to its CRM, warehouse, and CMS connectors.
* **Meetings.** WRITER Meet reached [general availability on September 9, 2026](https://writer.com/blog/enterprise-brain-press-release/). Per WRITER's [help center](https://support.writer.com/articles/1313908954-what-s-new-at-writer), it joins meetings, transcribes them in real time, and writes summaries with decisions and next steps.

## What does Writer ground, and how?

Grounding ties a model's answer to sources the organization trusts. On Writer, Knowledge Graph retrieves, Palmyra generates, and Agent Builder or WRITER Agent decides when to retrieve.

### How does Knowledge Graph work?

Knowledge Graph is Writer's [graph-based retrieval system](https://dev.writer.com/home/knowledge-graph-concepts). Rather than only matching vectors against document chunks, it maps the entities, concepts, and relationships in your content and traverses them at query time. Three kinds of input feed it:

* **File uploads** in PDF, text, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, CSV, EML, HTML, and SRT formats
* **Data connectors** for Confluence, Notion, Google Drive, and SharePoint
* **Web content**, from specific URLs or entire domains, with automatic updates

The documentation describes five stages: content ingestion, graph construction, indexing, query processing, and response generation. At the last stage Palmyra combines the retrieved material with the question and returns an answer, with optional inline citations.

![Writer Knowledge Graph flow: files, data connectors, and websites feed content ingestion; graph construction (entity recognition, relationship mapping, concept extraction) builds the Knowledge Graph index; a user question then passes through query processing, graph traversal, retrieval, response generation, and AI model processing to an answer](/images/what-is-writer-ai-enterprise-platform/1-how-the-writer-knowledge-graph-works.webp){width=1600 height=1126}

*How the Writer Knowledge Graph works. Source: [Writer documentation](https://dev.writer.com/home/knowledge-graph-concepts).*

Builders tune retrieval through a [query configuration](https://dev.writer.com/home/knowledge-graph-query-config) with settings such as `grounding_level` and `max_snippets`, and manage graphs in AI Studio or through the [Knowledge Graph API](https://dev.writer.com/home/knowledge-graph).

### What does Knowledge Graph hold?

Writer's documentation describes Knowledge Graph in terms of files, connected sources, and web pages. A governed metric definition with a named owner, a version, and lineage back to source tables is a different kind of object, and the pages we reviewed on October 12, 2026 do not describe Knowledge Graph as storing one. Confirm that with Writer before you plan around it.

Structured data in a warehouse or CRM reaches WRITER Agent through connectors at query time, so the agent sees whatever the source system returns. That division suits retrieval. It also shows why a separate layer has to decide what a term like "qualified pipeline" means across systems. The [context layer vs. knowledge graph](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/context-layer-vs-knowledge-graph/) comparison covers the distinction, and a [knowledge graph](https://atlan.com/know/what-is-a-knowledge-graph/) guide covers the structure itself.

---

## What are the core components of Writer AI?

The platform has six building blocks, and each one is a Writer product.

### 1. Palmyra model family

Palmyra is the family of large language models Writer builds and serves. [Palmyra X6](https://writer.com/blog/palmyra-x6-major-harness-release/), released on August 13, 2026, was post-trained on top of the open-weight GLM 5.2 model. WRITER also lists models from providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI as options in WRITER Agent. Through [external models](https://dev.writer.com/home/external-models), admins can connect models from AWS Bedrock and OpenRouter.

### 2. Knowledge Graph

The retrieval layer described above, which turns your files and connected sources into answers with citations.

### 3. Agent Builder

[Agent Builder](https://dev.writer.com/agent-builder/overview) is a low-code tool for custom agents. Each agent has a blueprint, which is a visual map of its logic built from blocks for tool calling, RAG, text generation, and state, and a UI. A custom code feature lets developers add Python where the blocks fall short.

### 4. WRITER Agent, Skills, and Playbooks

[WRITER Agent](https://support.writer.com/article/293-how-to-use-action-agent) breaks a goal into steps, picks the logic and tools, and produces finished deliverables. Two building blocks shape what it does:

* **Skills** are narrow, reusable units of expertise. WRITER's launch announcement describes a [library of more than 200 ready-to-use Skills](https://writer.com/blog/writer-agent-skills-playbooks-press-release/).
* **Playbooks** chain Skills together with conditional logic to complete a whole task. Teams share them and trigger them on events or routines.

### 5. AI Studio

[AI Studio](https://dev.writer.com/home/introduction) is where platform and IT teams set controls once for every application they build. It covers guardrails, event logs and session logs, customer-managed encryption keys, model configuration, data connections, and tracking of token consumption, cost, and spend.

### 6. Enterprise Brain and Agent Memory

On September 9, 2026, WRITER introduced [Enterprise Brain](https://writer.com/blog/enterprise-brain-press-release/), which it calls a governed, universal context layer. Per the announcement, it sits beneath every agent, workflow, and output on the WRITER platform. Enterprise Brain is in early access for a select group of customers. [Agent Memory](https://support.writer.com/articles/4972781381-understanding-writer-agent-memory), which captures preferences and context from sessions and promotes shared context to team level once three or more teammates hold it, is generally available.

---

## What does Writer cost to run?

### How Writer prices the platform

The [plans page](https://writer.com/plans) shows two tiers. Starter comes with a 14-day free trial, up to five users, up to five Playbooks, a single 50 GB graph, and up to three active connectors. Enterprise has custom pricing through sales and offers unrestricted users, Playbooks, and connectors, with Pro and Lite seat types, SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, and a HIPAA BAA. The page lists no per-user price for Starter, so get one in writing.

Developers calling the API pay per token. The [models documentation](https://dev.writer.com/home/models) lists Palmyra X6 at $2.00 per million input tokens and $8.00 per million output tokens, and names it the default model for WRITER Agent. The same page bills Palmyra X5 inside WRITER Agent at $5.00 input and $12.00 output per million tokens, against $0.60 and $6.00 on the API. Palmyra X5 and X4 carry a deprecation date of December 14, 2026.

WRITER reports that [WRITER Agent paired with Palmyra X6 runs at an average 52% lower cost](https://writer.com/blog/palmyra-x6-major-harness-release/). That is a vendor measurement, so test your own workload before budgeting on it.

### Where the bill grows

Seat prices start the conversation, and two other lines move the total. Model choice changes the cost of the same task, so check the rate for the exact model and surface you plan to use. Context maintenance adds people time: each platform that keeps its own copy of business definitions needs someone to maintain it. Defining context once in a shared layer avoids paying that cost on every platform. The [context layer TCO](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/context-layer-tco-build-vs-buy-vs-bundle/) guide prices build, buy, and bundle paths, and the skill above sizes the hours your team loses today. For the broader trade-off, see [RAG pipeline vs. context layer TCO](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/rag-pipeline-vs-context-layer-tco/).

### Questions to ask in an enterprise quote

1. Which capabilities are included, and which are priced as add-ons, such as Knowledge Graph capacity or connectors?
2. How is WRITER Agent usage metered, and does the contract include a token allowance?
3. What can a Lite seat do that a Pro seat cannot?
4. What export options exist for Knowledge Graphs, Skills, and Playbooks if the contract ends? The [File API](https://dev.writer.com/api-reference/file-api/download-file) downloads uploaded files, and the other objects need a written answer.

---

## How do you integrate Writer with your data and AI stack?

Integration runs through four paths, and one limit matters for architecture planning.

1. **Document sources.** Confluence, Notion, Google Drive, SharePoint, file uploads, and website URLs feed Knowledge Graph directly.
2. **Action connectors through the MCP gateway.** WRITER Agent reaches business systems through [25 prebuilt connectors](https://dev.writer.com/home/mcp-gateway), including Salesforce, Snowflake, and Gong. Custom connectors accept any API with an OpenAPI specification or any external MCP server. Traffic can route over AWS PrivateLink or GCP Private Service Connect. The [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/) is the open standard underneath, and the [MCP architecture deep dive](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/mcp-architecture-deep-dive/) explains how clients, servers, and gateways fit together.
3. **Developer integration.** [AI Studio](https://dev.writer.com/home/introduction) offers APIs and SDKs for Python and Node.js covering chat completions, knowledge graphs, and tool calling. Documented framework support includes LangChain, AWS Strands Agents, Instructor, and Amazon Bedrock, and telemetry exports through OpenLLMetry.
4. **Outbound access for other AI tools.** The [WRITER MCP server](https://dev.writer.com/home/writer-mcp) lets any MCP-compatible client run published Playbooks, download the files they produce, and read WRITER Meet recordings.

### The limit to plan around

Writer's documentation states that [MCP connectors are available for WRITER Agent, and do not currently support Agent Builder, no-code agents, or API integrations](https://dev.writer.com/home/mcp-gateway). Agents built another way reach outside systems through the tool-calling route instead. If you run a mix of agent types, map which connection path each one uses before you commit.

---

## Does Writer still need a separate context layer?

Every enterprise AI platform ships its own grounding. Writer uses Knowledge Graph, Skills, Voice, and Enterprise Brain. CRM vendors ground agents in the records inside their applications, and warehouses ground AI analysts in semantic models on their own tables. The [Agentforce comparison](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/agentforce-vs-independent-context-layer/) and the [Sierra AI explainer](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/what-is-sierra-ai/) show the same pattern on other vendors.

Each store is useful on its own. Together they leave several partial versions of the business, each held by a different vendor.

Same Model, Different Context: Two AI Agents, One Question

### What does "universal" mean for Enterprise Brain?

WRITER describes Enterprise Brain as a universal context layer, and inside the WRITER platform it carries context across teams and agents. The launch places it beneath the agents, workflows, and outputs that run on Writer. That is one runtime's scope. Built-in grounding is enough when most agent work happens inside Writer. It thins out when a question about net revenue reaches a Writer agent, a CRM agent, and a warehouse AI analyst, and each answers from its own copy.

### Does connecting to Salesforce and Snowflake make Writer a context layer?

Connecting to a system and serving context to every system's agents are two different jobs. Writer's connectors pull data from Salesforce and Snowflake into WRITER Agent, so Writer's own agent can use it. Salesforce's agents and Snowflake's AI analysts keep grounding themselves in their own native context. When WRITER Agent queries a table, it receives what the table or semantic view returns at that moment. The connector documentation covers authentication and tool access. Whether certification status, ownership, or change history reaches the agent depends on what the source system exposes.

### What should an enterprise context layer provide?

When enterprise AI runs on more than one platform, look for three properties:

* **Neutrality.** It runs no business agents of its own, so no single runtime shapes its definitions.
* **Open access.** Any agent reads from it over open protocols such as MCP, plus SQL and APIs.
* **Ownership.** Definitions carry named owners, versions, and lineage to source data, so teams can audit and move them.

The [context layer evaluation criteria](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/context-layer-evaluation-criteria/) expand each one. [Full-stack platform vs. best-of-breed context layer](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/full-stack-ai-platform-vs-best-of-breed-context-layer/) frames the buying decision, and [single-stack lock-in vs. a neutral context layer](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/single-stack-lock-in-vs-neutral-context-layer/) covers portability.

### How does Atlan work alongside Writer?

Atlan connects to the systems an enterprise already runs and organizes what it learns into an [Enterprise Data Graph](https://atlan.com/know/enterprise-data-graph/), an [Active Ontology](https://atlan.com/know/what-is-active-ontology/), and [Context Repos](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-repository-for-ai-agents/). Teams assemble repos in Context Engineering Studio. Per the [Atlan documentation](https://docs.atlan.com/platform/context-engineering-studio/what-is-context-engineering-studio), a repo renders into the format each target expects, including Snowflake Cortex Analyst, Databricks Genie, dbt, and Claude.

The [Atlan MCP server](https://docs.atlan.com/product/capabilities/atlan-ai/how-tos/remote-mcp-overview) is hosted at `https://mcp.atlan.com/mcp`. It lets an agent search enterprise context, traverse end-to-end lineage, read governed definitions and glossaries, and run SQL. Atlan's documentation lists Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, Snowflake, Databricks, Google ADK, and Microsoft Copilot Studio among the supported clients. Writer is not on that list. Writer's [custom connectors accept any external MCP server](https://dev.writer.com/home/mcp-gateway), so a connection is plausible for WRITER Agent, and you should test it in your own environment before you design around it. The [what is Atlan MCP](https://atlan.com/know/what-is-atlan-mcp/) guide and the [MCP for data lineage](https://atlan.com/know/mcp/mcp-for-data-lineage/) page cover what the server exposes.

For a deeper look at how the two kinds of context differ, read [Writer Knowledge Graph vs. enterprise context layer](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/writer-knowledge-graph-vs-enterprise-context-layer/). A [model-agnostic context layer](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/context-layer/model-agnostic-context-layer/) matters most when the platforms above it keep changing.

---

## Moving forward with Writer AI

Writer offers a single-vendor stack for enterprise agents: Palmyra models, graph-based retrieval, Agent Builder, WRITER Agent, and an AI Studio console. Its connectors, Enterprise Brain, and Playbooks all lean toward marketing and revenue work, and Knowledge Graph handles document-heavy tasks such as drafting, summarizing, and answering from policies.

The harder planning question sits outside Writer. Most AI estates will run Writer agents next to [Salesforce Agentforce](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/what-is-salesforce-agentforce/), [Microsoft Copilot Studio agents](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/what-are-microsoft-copilot-studio-agents/), warehouse AI analysts, and custom frameworks such as [Google ADK](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/what-is-google-adk/). Each runtime grounds itself in its own version of the business, which is why [business context for AI](https://atlan.com/know/business-context-for-ai/) tends to go missing. Before you scale, map where terms like qualified pipeline and net revenue are defined today. Then decide whether a shared layer such as Atlan should own those definitions and serve them to every agent, Writer's included. Context that has to survive a platform change is the part worth keeping out of any single vendor's formats. The [AI agent tech stack](https://atlan.com/know/ai-agent/ai-agent-applications/how-to-build-ai-agent-tech-stack/) guide shows where that layer sits, and [context engineering for AI agents](https://atlan.com/know/context-engineering-for-ai-agents/) covers how teams build it.

## FAQs about Writer AI

### 1. What is Writer AI used for?

Writer AI is the platform from WRITER for building and running enterprise AI agents. WRITER describes it as an enterprise AI platform for agentic work, aimed at marketing and revenue teams. Typical uses include brand-consistent content, go-to-market workflows, knowledge assistants that answer from company documents with citations, and meeting summaries through WRITER Meet.

### 2. What is Palmyra?

Palmyra is the family of large language models that WRITER builds and serves. Palmyra X6, released on August 13, 2026, is the default model for WRITER Agent and is listed at $2.00 per million input tokens and $8.00 per million output tokens on the API. It was post-trained on top of the open-weight GLM 5.2 model.

### 3. Is Writer AI the same as an AI writing assistant?

No. WRITER is a company name. The platform today includes its own models, Knowledge Graph retrieval, an agent builder, and an autonomous agent that runs Skills and Playbooks across business systems. Content generation is one job among many that those agents run.

### 4. How is the Writer Knowledge Graph different from vector RAG?

Vector RAG splits documents into chunks and retrieves the chunks closest to a query in embedding space. Knowledge Graph builds a graph of the entities, concepts, and relationships in your content, then traverses that graph at query time. Writer's documentation cites research suggesting graph-based relationships can improve accuracy over vector-only approaches. It gives no accuracy figure, so test it on your own content.

### 5. Can Writer agents read business context from outside Writer?

Yes, for WRITER Agent. Its connectors cover 25 prebuilt systems, including Salesforce, Snowflake, and Gong, and custom connectors accept any API with an OpenAPI specification or any external MCP server. Writer's documentation states that connectors do not currently support Agent Builder, no-code agents, or API integrations.

### 6. What happens to your business definitions if you move off Writer?

Writer's File API lets you download files you uploaded. Skills, Playbooks, Voice settings, Knowledge Graphs, and Enterprise Brain are Writer features, so a new platform would need them rebuilt in its own format. Definitions kept in a platform-neutral context layer stay where they are while the runtime changes.

### 7. What should a CTO ask about context portability before adopting Writer?

Ask where each business definition will live, who owns it, and in what format. Ask Writer what export options exist for Knowledge Graphs, Skills, Playbooks, and Agent Memory, and whether agents outside Writer can read the same context. Then ask whether your definitions would survive a platform change without being rewritten.
