**Use Case Guide: Compliance Management.** An Atlan resource page; its description follows under the page's own heading.

## About this guide

A detailed guide to data compliance management in Atlan: how organizations meet regulations like GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA by identifying, securing, and monitoring sensitive data. It covers the risks of poor compliance (legal fines, breaches of trust, unauthorized access) and a playbook for reducing them.

### Four sub-use cases, built on Atlan's governance features

- **Sensitive data identification** (page 4): classify sensitive assets with Atlan tags, by importing existing tags from systems like Snowflake, applying bulk rules with playbooks, or tagging manually with human context. Classifications can propagate downstream via lineage for full coverage.
- **Access controls** (page 5): enforce permissions on sensitive data by syncing Atlan tags with data source policies (e.g., Snowflake masking), using BYOC to inherit source-level access, or creating policies natively in Atlan.
- **Auditing sensitive data** (page 6): visibility into all sensitive assets for compliance teams via Atlan's Reporting Center, filters, and APIs. Lineage diagrams show where sensitive data flows into or out of systems.
- **Proactive monitoring** (page 7): alerts on schema or metadata changes to sensitive assets via EventBridge or webhooks, so compliance and security teams are notified instantly.

### Measuring business impact (page 8)

A framework for quantifying impact: time spent tagging sensitive assets, time taken to respond to auditors, and costs of non-compliance. It also recommends measuring audit closure times, headcount dedicated to compliance, and organizational risk reduction.

The stated outcome: moving from reactive compliance to proactive governance by centralizing sensitive data management, enforcing access controls, simplifying audits, and monitoring changes in real time.
