What it means to be an Atlanian
We are building Atlan to be an iconic and enduring company.
Not a feature. Not a category winner. A company that humans and AI look to and say: This changed how we work, what we could do, and who we became while doing it.
That ambition shapes everything. The problems we take on. The standards we hold. The speed at which we move. And most importantly, the people we build this with.
At Atlan, we believe the single greatest driver of what we become is who we are: how we think, how we show up, and how we treat the work and each other. Culture isn't a benefit. It's core to our strategy.
We are unreasonable about talent.
Not because we're elitist, but because the mission demands it. A single exceptional person who cares deeply creates more than a team of good ones who don't. We hold the bar high, we invest in each other relentlessly, and we never confuse being kind with being accountable.
These convictions are grounded in our values — the core beliefs that tell us who we are and what we stand for. They are Atlan's constitution: the things we would defend, not just display on a wall. Everything in this primer flows from them.
This primer is how those values translate into daily behavior. It captures ten ways of working that, taken together, describe what it means to be Atlanian — not as rules handed down from above, but as patterns observed in the people who have built something remarkable here.
Customer → Company → Team → Me
This is the lens we use for real trade-offs.
When there is a genuine conflict, we solve for the customer first, then Atlan, then the team, then ourselves. Not because people matter less, but because we choose long-term impact over short-term comfort.
- Tying goals to clear customer outcomes, not just internal metrics
- Choosing the option that helps multiple teams, not just our own
- Asking for help when we are blocked on something that really matters
Success here is what moves customers and Atlan forward, not only what is easiest for us.
Own it: the problem, the outcome, the company
Owners do not wait for someone else to fix things.
Every Atlanian is expected to act like an owner of the company. If you see a problem, you help move it forward, whether that means naming it clearly, sharing context, proposing a next step, or pulling the right people into the room.
- Joining a stuck discussion to summarise, recommend and close the loop
- Giving direct, respectful feedback that improves someone else's work
- Caring about outcomes beyond your official scope
If the outcome was not achieved, we all own the opportunity to do better next time.
Care is our competitive advantage
We are an AI-native company, and we believe our human advantage is care.
Care shows up in how we work with customers and with each other.
- We show up for difficult calls and messy problems, not just the easy wins
- We start with the person, then the task
- We give frequent, specific feedback because we want each other to grow
- We look after our own energy and health so our care is real, not burnt out or performative
If you naturally lean in, notice details, and care "too much", you will feel at home here.
Move fast. Ship small. Close the loop.
One Atlan year feels like several anywhere else. We use speed as a strategy.
We ship in small, useful increments. We favour clear decisions over long, unresolved threads. We start from real problems and are willing to adjust quickly as we learn.
- Experiments and iterations shipping weekly, not just big launches
- Teams asking "what did we ship and what did we learn" every cycle
- People closing loops instead of letting things drift
Velocity here means moving fast in the right direction, not chasing chaos.
Make excellence a rhythm
Excellence is not a quarterly push here, it is the baseline we build toward every day.
We talk about giving 120 percent. In practice that means:
- Solving for outcomes that genuinely change things for customers
- Reviewing and improving our own systems, not just repeating them
- Digging into root causes instead of fighting the same fires again and again
We celebrate thoughtful judgment and elegant solutions more than raw hours worked.
Be straightforward
We say things plainly and directly.
When there is confusion, conflict or critique, we go to the person who can actually change it. We do not gossip. We do not manage optics. We do not keep different versions of the truth for different rooms.
- Giving honest feedback, delivered with respect
- Naming gaps early instead of letting them become surprises
- Choosing clarity over looking good
That is how we keep trust high and drama low.
Make hard calls with clarity and urgency
We care deeply about people, and we do not let hard calls linger.
- Set clear standards so expectations are obvious, not hidden
- Say no to hires who do not raise the bar, even when capacity is tight
- Move quickly and respectfully when someone is in the wrong role
- Expect an active yes to growth, new feedback and new levels of ownership
We choose the honest conversation over the comfortable one.
Stay close to the work and to customers
Everyone at Atlan picks up the broom.
We all do unglamorous work. Taking notes. Sending follow-ups. Cleaning up docs or decks. Sometimes literal clean-up after a long day together. These are acts of care for each other and for customers.
- Being in the trenches when it matters, regardless of title
- Going deep on problems to understand the real "why" behind the ask
- Acting as an unblocker, not a distant commentator
"No one is too senior for this" is not a slogan here, it is how we operate.
Be a builder
If you join Atlan, we expect you to be a builder, whatever your discipline.
- Owning problems end to end, not just your task
- Prototyping, iterating and sharing work in progress
- Asking how AI and automation can help, and trying it
- Treating our own product as a playground for new workflows and ideas
We would rather you ship something small that teaches us what to do next than polish something that arrives too late.
Choose optimism, then go prove it right
Optimism here is a choice and a responsibility.
We choose to believe that Atlan can solve big, hard problems and then we work to make that belief true. We welcome hard questions and sharp critique, but we do not sit on the sidelines saying "this will never work" without lifting a finger.
- When you see a gap, a fuzzy situation or a problem with no clear owner, the Atlanian move is: if not me, who. If not now, when.
That is not anxiety. It is confidence that together we can figure it out.
