About this demo

This resource provides a simple yet powerful flow chart to help teams identify whether they currently have a data solution or a data product, along with actionable suggestions for making the transition. Created as part of the Atlan Masterclass series, it ties directly to user-centered design principles and the creation of data personas.

The chart walks through a series of diagnostic questions. It begins by asking whether the work helps more than one person and whether it addresses multiple needs—key indicators of reusability. From there, it examines repeatability, prompting teams to consider if clear processes or frameworks exist, whether the work can be maintained, and if it could be replicated by others. Finally, it evaluates delivered value, asking whether colleagues can find and use the output, and whether the value can be measured and demonstrated.

If the answer chain points to ad-hoc, one-off, or difficult-to-repeat outputs, the work is categorized as a solution. But if the answers demonstrate reusability, repeatability, and measurable value, then it qualifies as a product. The chart not only helps teams self-assess but also provides a roadmap for evolving solutions into sustainable, scalable products by embedding repeatable processes, documentation, and measurable impact.

By following this framework, data leaders and practitioners can better align their work with organizational goals, ensuring that outputs are not just quick fixes but enduring, value-driven data products. This distinction is crucial for scaling data practices, improving collaboration, and delivering long-term business impact.
