About this demo

This resource provides a comprehensive playbook for creating a single source of truth for metrics and business terms in Atlan. It addresses common challenges such as siloed knowledge, inconsistent definitions, lack of governance, and costly duplication of work.

For the metrics catalog, the guide outlines three levels of maturity. At Level 1, organizations create a business glossary of key metrics with definitions, calculation logic, and context. At Level 2, these glossary terms are linked to physical assets and saved queries, allowing end users to validate lineage and run queries themselves. At Level 3, governance processes are added, including clear ownership, glossary-level access policies, edit requests, and certifications, which establish accountability and build trust (pages 4–6).

For the business glossary, the guide again introduces maturity steps. At Level 1, organizations create glossaries of key business terms, unifying definitions across departments and serving as a powerful onboarding tool. At Level 2, governance is layered on, with owners, certifications, and glossary edit policies ensuring consistency and accuracy over time (pages 12–13).

In addition to solutions, the guide provides a framework for quantifying impact. Metrics include reductions in tickets related to metric or term confusion, time saved on understanding definitions, and costs avoided from inaccurate reporting. For public KPIs, the guide highlights how Atlan helps reduce compliance risks, including fines for incorrect external reporting (pages 8, 14).

By following this playbook, organizations can eliminate ambiguity, reduce wasted effort, and build confidence in shared language. A well-governed metrics catalog and glossary not only improve collaboration between technical and business users but also provide a trusted foundation for data-driven decisions at every level.
