About this demo

This resource provides a detailed guide to data discovery in Atlan, focusing on how users can quickly find and understand the right data assets without heavy reliance on subject matter experts. It addresses common problems such as siloed tools, tribal knowledge, inaccessible interfaces, and uncertainty about data trustworthiness.

The guide introduces three levels of solutions. At Level 1, users can discover data assets easily through Atlan’s search capabilities. Search is available directly in the UI via the search bar or cmd+K, and also from integrated tools like Slack and Teams. Features like synonym search and sorting by relevance, popularity, or recency improve accuracy (page 4).

At Level 2, users refine results using filters, narrowing searches by asset type, connectors, metadata fields (certificates, owners, classifications, terms), properties, usage metadata, or even custom metadata fields like data freshness scores. These filters ensure discovery is precise and targeted (page 5).

At Level 3, users can understand assets better by exploring their metadata-rich profiles, which include owners, descriptions, certificates, lineage, sample data previews, and custom metadata. This context helps establish trust and usability before an asset is used (page 6).

To support adoption, the guide highlights features that embed discovery into everyday workflows. Examples include embedding asset URLs in tools like Jira or slides, right-click browser searches powered by Atlan’s Chrome extension, and consuming metadata directly in BI tools with Atlan’s sidebar. Users can also view related Slack threads, Jira tickets, and linked resources from within Atlan, consolidating scattered knowledge (pages 7–10).

Finally, it introduces a framework for quantifying business impact, suggesting ways to measure time saved in discovering and understanding assets, reduction in ad hoc requests, and fewer dependencies on individuals. Metrics include ticket volumes, time spent per ticket, and survey-based measures of user effort (page 11).

By combining intuitive search, powerful filters, contextual metadata, and cross-tool integrations, this guide demonstrates how Atlan transforms discovery into a fast, reliable, and collaborative process—empowering everyone in the organization to become more data-driven.
